The Sweetness of Coming Back In

The "feels like" temperature today was 111°.
The air conditioning wasn't a luxury. It was survival.
But as I stepped from the cool house into the thick, humid air, I noticed something.
For just a second, it felt...good.
Not because it was comfortable—it wasn't. It was like walking into a warm, wet blanket. But there was something strangely satisfying about feeling the heat after the cool.
Then, after watering flowers and wandering through the garden for a while, I walked back inside.
And suddenly, the air conditioning felt wonderful all over again.
Have you ever noticed that?
Neither experience feels quite the same without the other.
The cool is sweetest because you've known the heat.
The shade is most welcome after standing in the sun.
A glass of water tastes different when you're thirsty.
Perhaps our lives work that way too.
Maybe we don't simply appreciate comfort because it exists. We appreciate it because we've experienced discomfort.
Contrast has a way of awakening gratitude.
The ordinary kindnesses we overlook every day become extraordinary when we've been without them, even for a little while.
Maybe that's why I find myself thanking God for air conditioning today.
Not because it changed the weather.
But because it reminded me that some of life's greatest comforts are only fully enjoyed after we've stepped through a little heat.
Sometimes, gratitude isn't found in getting something new.
Sometimes it's found in returning to something we've had all along.
