The Warmest Place in the Yard

This afternoon, Tyson found his favorite patch of grass.

The sun had finally reached that little corner of the yard, warming the earth just enough to make it irresistible. He lowered himself slowly, let out a contented sigh, and closed his eyes as though he had nowhere else in the world he needed to be.

I stopped what I was doing and watched him.

Really watched him.

His muzzle is whiter now than it used to be.

His steps are slower.

The naps are longer.

Somewhere along the way, the years quietly accumulated.

I don't know how many more sunny afternoons he'll have.

And if I'm honest, I don't know how many more I'll have with him.

That thought settled gently over me—not with panic, but with tenderness.

For years, I assumed there would always be another summer.

Another afternoon.

Another warm patch of grass.

But love has a way of teaching us that nothing earthly is promised forever.

Perhaps that's why ordinary moments become so precious.

Not because they're extraordinary.

But because they are fleeting.

Tyson wasn't worrying about tomorrow.

He wasn't counting the years.

He was simply receiving the warmth of the sun as today's gift.

I wonder how often I miss today's gifts because I'm grieving tomorrow's losses before they've even arrived.

Jesus told us not to worry about tomorrow, not because tomorrow doesn't matter, but because today is already full of His care.

Maybe that's what Tyson reminded me of.

To stop.

To sit in the sunshine.

To receive what God has given today without borrowing sorrow from another day.

One day, this patch of grass will be empty.

I know that.

But today...

It wasn't.

Today, it held an old friend with a gray face, warm sunshine on his back, and a quiet contentment that preached a better sermon than words ever could.

So today, I sat beside him a little longer.

I let the sun warm my face, too.

And I thanked God—not for someday, but for today.

For one more ordinary afternoon.

For one more faithful companion.

For one more gift I might have hurried past if I hadn't stopped to notice.

"This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."Psalm 118:24 (NKJV)
